Shu Chien received his medical degree from National Taiwan University and Ph.D. (Physiology) from Columbia University. He was a faculty at Columbia Physiology till 1988, when he came to University of California, San Diego, where he is University Professor and Y.C. Fung Professor of Bioengineering and Medicine. He established the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Bioengineering, and Institute of Engineering in Medicine at UCSD, and UC System-wide Bioengineering Institute in California.

Chien has made seminal contributions to cardiovascular regulation, blood rheology, blood cell mechanics, and endothelial cell mechanotransduction. His awards and honours include Melville Medal (twice), Landis Award, Galletti Award, Zweifach Award, Poiseuille Medal, and Founders Award of National Academy of Engineering. He has been President of Biomedical Engineering Society, American Society of Physiology, Microcirculatory Society, and International Society of Biorheology, as well as Federation of Societies of Experimental Biology (FASEB) and American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Chien is Member of all three U.S. National Academies (National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine), and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is Member of Academia Sinica in Taipei and Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.
